The Great Wall of Clint

You'll find the remains of a proper Roman fortification just outside Harrogate, and it's one of those places that rewards a bit of detective work. The Great Wall of Clint isn't dramatic ruins - it's more a series of earthworks and stone foundations scattered across farmland, but that's actually what makes it compelling. Walking the site, you can trace where Roman soldiers once stood guard on this stretch of the northern frontier. The wall itself is fragmentary, which means you need imagination to picture it in its heyday, but therein lies the appeal.

History buffs will spend a solid hour here picking over the evidence of Roman occupation, though casual visitors might cover it in twenty minutes and feel they've got the gist. Families with older kids who aren't bored by archaeology will find it worthwhile; younger ones might struggle without proper interpretation boards on site. The walk itself is pleasant enough if the weather holds, with views across the Vale of York.

Admission appears to be free, which is just as well given the lack of facilities. There's no visitor centre or cafe, so come prepared. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Windmill Retreats is exceptionally rated and only four miles away - it's an easy half-day excursion combined with Harrogate itself. Don't make it your sole reason for a visit, but as a Roman history stop between larger attractions, it absolutely earns its place.
