About The Held
You're hiking to a summit, essentially. The walk takes you up through rough grassland and broken ground - nothing technical, but it's steep enough that you'll feel your legs on the way up. The reward is a 360-degree view across the Beacons and down into the Brecon valleys. On a clear day, the horizon seems to stretch forever. On a murky one, which is most days to be fair, you'll get that moody Welsh mountain atmosphere in spades.
This is a walker's mountain. Families with young kids might find the climb a slog without proper reward - there's no cafe at the top, no interpretive signage, just wind and rock and views. But if you're the type who likes wild, windswept places without the crowds, it's excellent. Two hours round trip if you're steady.
Brecon's your nearest town, with Cefn Cantref Campsite practically on the doorstep. It's the perfect half-day detour if you're camping locally or doing the Beacons properly. Access is straightforward from the footpath network, and admission is free - it's a mountain, not a visitor attraction.
