The Lake

Water stretches out proper calm here, ringed by trees that shift colour with the seasons. The Lake near Faringdon isn't dramatic or showy - it's the kind of place you stumble upon and think, right, this is what I needed. You can walk the perimeter if the mood takes you, sit on the bank with a flask, or just watch the light change across the surface. Families with small children will get a solid hour here; walkers might stretch it to two if they're in no rush.

It works brilliantly as a pit stop during a park holiday. Both The Real Campsite and Great Farm are within a few miles, so you could base yourself there and use The Lake as a morning walk or afternoon breather between longer explorations. The Real Campsite especially has that reputation for doing things right, and this would be the sort of low-key pocket of calm you'd want nearby.

There's no fanfare here - no visitor centre, no marked facilities that I'm aware of. Bring your own coffee. The appeal is straightforward: quiet water, space to breathe, no admission charge nibbling at your budget. Autumn's when it's genuinely worth the detour, when the reflections get interesting and the paths aren't thick with summer crowds. Spring's pleasant too. Winter can feel a touch bleak unless you're after moody.
