The Large Fort - Garn Goch

Two massive Iron Age hillforts sit on the ridge above Llangadog, and Garn Goch - the larger of the pair - is genuinely impressive once you've made the walk up. The fort consists of multiple ramparts and ditches cutting across the hilltop, all built around 500 BC to command views across the Towy Valley. You're standing inside walls that communities actually defended, and the scale of the earthworks is hard to ignore in person.

Getting there means a steady climb from the car park - nothing dramatic, but enough to warm you up. The site itself is free and open year-round, though there's nothing in the way of facilities or interpretation. That's partly its appeal if you're the type who enjoys reading the landscape yourself; it's less useful if you want everything spelled out. Walkers will find this satisfying, and keen archaeologists will want to spend an hour picking apart the layout. Families might manage 30 minutes before the kids want to move on, unless they're genuinely into Iron Age warfare.

The surrounding Towy Valley is gorgeous walking country, and Garn Goch fits neatly into a broader hill walk rather than a standalone trip. Several caravan parks sit within a few miles - Cosmos Camping and Barons Court are closest at just under three miles away - making this a decent morning or afternoon excursion during a wider stay. Go in clear weather; mist turns it into a rather bleak slog.
