The Leech Well

Water bubbles up through ancient stones in this curious little spring just outside Totnes, where medieval pilgrims once came seeking cures for all manner of ailments. The name gives away its rather grisly past - this was apparently where leeches were collected for medical bloodletting, though thankfully that's all behind us now.

What you'll find today is a simple stone-lined well surrounded by woodland, accessed via a short footpath that's muddy after rain but perfectly manageable. It's the sort of place that history enthusiasts will find properly atmospheric, while families might struggle to hold the kids' attention for more than ten minutes unless they're into ghost stories and old legends.

The well sits in a peaceful spot that feels genuinely ancient, with moss-covered stones and the constant sound of trickling water. There's no grand visitor centre or interpretation boards - just you, the spring, and whatever stories you bring with you. Takes about twenty minutes to walk there and back from the nearest parking.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Totnes like Ramslade or Whitehill Country Park, it makes for a decent leg-stretch on a morning walk. Just don't expect Instagram-worthy views - this is more about soaking up a bit of Devon's stranger history than ticking off a scenic highlight.
