The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Walking through the entrance near Saint Austell, you're stepping into something that genuinely feels lost - or at least thoroughly reclaimed by nature. The Lost Gardens of Heligan spent decades abandoned after the First World War, and the restoration work that began in the 1990s has been painstaking. What you get now is a sprawling estate of Victorian and Edwardian gardens in various states of rediscovery - some manicured back to their former glory, others deliberately left wild to show how plants reclaim human space.

There's the productive gardens where they actually grow vegetables in period style, the jungle - a deliberately overgrown ravine filled with exotic plants that feels genuinely tropical - and the ornamental lake. You can easily spend three to four hours wandering about, and families with children will find plenty to explore without it feeling forced. There's a real sense of adventure to it, which beats the more formal garden experience.

It's paid admission (reasonable by Cornish standards), and there's a café for when you need a breather. Worth going on a quieter weekday if possible - weekends get rammed. If you're camping at Heligan Caravan and Camping Park right next door, you're laughing - it's basically on your doorstep. Even from Pentewan Sands or The Meadows Campsite a mile or so away, it's an easy trip that genuinely justifies the entry fee. Not overrated, which is rare for somewhere this famous.
