The visitor experience includes tastings - and they're generous ones, not mean little thimbles. Allow three hours minimum if you're doing the full tour. History buffs and whisky enthusiasts will get the most from this; kids under ten might find it a bit heavy on process and light on theatre. The estate shop is proper good, stocked with everything from entry-level single malts to bottles that cost more than a holiday. It's not free entry - expect to pay for the privilege - but if you're staying at Hillside Havens just down the road, it's an easy afternoon trip that justifies itself. Go mid-week if you can. Weekends pull in coach parties and the tasting room gets rammed. Best time is autumn, when the light hits the valleys just right and there's fewer tourists clogging the car park.
