The National Golf Centre (Woodhall Spa)

Two championship courses spread across 200 acres of Lincolnshire heathland, with the Hotchkin course regularly hosting professional tournaments. The Hotchkin is proper golf - deep bunkers, gorse-lined fairways and greens that roll true but punish anything short of precision. It's been called one of England's finest inland courses, and having played it twice, I'd say that's fair comment. The Bracken course offers a gentler introduction but still demands respect, particularly around the water hazards on the back nine.

Serious golfers will love the challenge here, though weekend hackers might find the Hotchkin rather unforgiving. Expect to lose a few balls in the gorse if you're not striking it cleanly. The clubhouse is smart without being stuffy, and the pro shop stocks everything you'd need if you've forgotten something.

Book well ahead for the Hotchkin, especially during summer months. A round takes about four hours, so factor in time for lunch if you're making a day of it. Green fees aren't cheap, but you're paying for quality.

Staying at nearby Jubilee Park or Woodhall Country Park puts you within walking distance, making this an excellent base for a golf-focused break. Woodhall Spa itself has decent pubs and restaurants for post-round analysis.
