The Old Fire Station

A converted fire station sounds like the kind of place you'd spend twenty minutes in, but Southampton's old firehouse deserves longer than that. The building itself tells you something straight away - this is proper industrial heritage, all Victorian brick and that unmistakable weight of a working emergency service from another era.

Inside, you're walking through actual fire station rooms. The watch room where calls came in, the drill yard, sleeping quarters. They've done it right without turning it into a theme park. The engines and equipment are genuinely impressive - there's something about seeing a working fire engine from the 1920s that photographs don't capture. Kids who've got even a passing interest in vehicles or how things worked will be absorbed for a good hour or more.

It works particularly well if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Sunnydale Farm or Dibles Park are both within easy reach, making it a solid half-day activity without being a mission. Combined with Southampton's docks and the town centre, you've got enough to fill a day.

The museum isn't one for aimless wandering though. If you're not interested in fire service history or industrial buildings, you'll be out in thirty minutes. Worth checking opening hours before heading over - visitor numbers aren't huge, so they're not always open when you'd expect. It's genuinely worth the detour if you're in the area though, especially if you've got children old enough to appreciate the scale of those machines.
