The Pingle

The Pingle is a modest nature reserve on the outskirts of Woodhall Spa, the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning walk but won't keep you occupied all day. It's woodland and wetland habitat - proper fenland character - where you might spot marsh harriers, water voles if you're lucky, and the occasional kingfisher if the light's right.

The paths are straightforward and well-trodden, making it decent for families with younger kids or anyone after a gentle hour in the fresh air. Dog walkers use it regularly, and birdwatchers tend to know the spot well. Access appears to be free, and there's no formal visitor centre, so it's a turn-up-and-explore sort of visit rather than anything regimented.

Woodhall Spa itself is a pleasant Victorian spa town with its own charm - plenty of tearooms and a good golf course if that's your thing. The reserve sits handily for caravan holidays at Tattershall Lakes (just 1.7 miles away) or Willow Holt (1.9 miles), both far more substantial bases if you're planning a week in the area. It's not a headline attraction, but if you're camped nearby, 45 minutes here on a clear morning beats sitting on a caravan site.

Go early for wildlife, avoid midday if you want peace, and bring binoculars. It's the kind of place you appreciate more for what it represents - proper working fenland - than for being obviously spectacular.
