The Plantation

The Plantation is a proper old-growth forest sitting just outside Salisbury, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's woodland as it should be - tall conifers mixed with broadleaf trees, proper forest floor underfoot, and enough space to lose the crowds without getting lost yourself.

Walkers will find it genuinely worthwhile. The paths wind through without being manicured to death, and there's that satisfying mix of open glades and dense cover that keeps things interesting over an hour or two. Kids won't get bored if you're the type to stop and point out bark patterns or hunt for woodland creatures - though if they're after playground equipment and ice cream, you'll need to manage expectations.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slower pace. Morning visits tend to be quieter, and after rain the whole thing smells properly alive. No phone signal is almost guaranteed, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mindset.

The main thing: check before you go. Opening hours aren't widely published, and admission details are sparse online. A quick call to Salisbury's tourist office will save a wasted trip. If you're staying at Summerlands Caravan Park, it's only six miles away, making this an easy add-on to a forest-and-cathedral kind of week. Plan for two to three hours if you're walking properly, less if you're just passing through.
