The Quarry Face

The exposed rockface at Quarry Face is one of those stops that catches you off guard if you're exploring the limestone country around Northampton. You're looking at raw geology here - layers of pale stone that tell you something about what lies beneath the East Midlands, which is far more interesting than it sounds once you're actually standing there.

It's less of a destination and more of a diversion, really. The view itself won't leave you breathless, but the quarry workings give you a proper sense of industrial heritage - this landscape has been shaped by extraction and use for centuries. Bring binoculars if you're into geology or industrial archaeology; casual walkers might spend twenty minutes max before moving on. Kids will find it moderately interesting if you spin them a yarn about how the stone got there.

No entrance fee as far as anyone can tell, and it's accessible year-round, though winter rains can make the approach muddy. Allow half an hour if you're making a deliberate stop, less if you're just passing through on a circuit walk.

If you're basing yourself at Grendon Lakes, just 3.6 miles away, Quarry Face works well as a leg-stretcher between the water and a proper walk. Sywell Country Park, five miles off, is the stronger pull for a full day out, but combining the two gives you enough to fill an afternoon without straining yourself.
