The Red Feather Club 95th Bomb Group Museum

The Red Feather Club sits on the old airfield at Ridgewell, just outside Eye in Suffolk - a proper shrine to the American airmen who flew from here during the Second World War. It's housed in what was once the officers' club, and walking through feels genuinely moving. The 95th Bomb Group flew B-17 Flying Fortresses from this base, and the museum documents their operations with photographs, uniforms, personal letters and aircraft bits that ground the history in real lives rather than dates.

You'll need a couple of hours to do it justice, though history buffs could easily spend half a day here. The volunteers who run it clearly know their stuff - most have family connections to the base - and they'll happily chat about specific raids or individual crew members. It's not flashy, which is rather the point. There's no gift shop nonsense, just straightforward remembrance.

It's more for people who genuinely want to understand what happened on this stretch of Suffolk farmland between 1942 and 1945.
