The Reddings

A sprawling woodland south of Gloucester that feels properly cut off from the world once you're under the canopy. The Reddings is ancient mixed forest - oak, beech, pine - with a network of walking trails that range from gentle ambles to proper leg-burners depending which way you head. The undergrowth is thick and maze-like in places, which is exactly why it works so well.

Walkers get the most from this one. There's no visitor centre, no tea shop, no interpretation boards - just you, the trees, and the occasional muddy path that'll test your boots. Bring a map or download a route before you arrive because the place doesn't hold your hand. That's its charm, mind you. The forest floor shifts seasonally: bluebells in spring, dense green in summer, autumnal gold if you time it right. An hour to ninety minutes is the sweet spot for most people, though you could easily spend longer if you're the type who dawdles.

If you're based at Pelerine Caravan & Camping Site or Apple Orchard just up the road, The Reddings makes a cracking morning or afternoon diversion. It's close enough not to eat your whole day but proper enough to feel like you've actually been somewhere. Kids who like climbing trees and building dens will get hours out of it; those expecting a playground won't. Admission is free and there's basic parking at the entrance. Best visited when it's not been bucketing with rain - the place becomes a boot-sucker when wet.
