The Royal Yacht Britannia

The Royal Yacht Britannia sits in Leith, just across the water from Burntisland, and it's genuinely one of those attractions that surprises you with how much there is to explore. This was the Queen's floating palace for over 40 years - the actual vessel where state visits happened, where royals relaxed, where history unfolded on the open water. You board via a proper gangway and work your way through five decks, and it becomes clear this wasn't some gilded showpiece. The crew quarters are cramped, the kitchens functional, the royal suites elegant but surprisingly modest.

Historically minded visitors will spend a solid two to three hours here, reading the plaques, studying the photographs, absorbing the details of how the ship operated. Children under ten might flag after 90 minutes unless they're genuinely into maritime history. The audio guide is thorough without being tedious, and staff know their stuff if you want to ask questions.

Admission isn't free, and it's a bit of a trek from Burntisland - worth doing as part of a wider Fife circuit rather than a day trip on its own. If you're staying at Pettycur Bay or Sandhills Caravan Park nearby, you're well positioned to combine this with walks along the coast and visits to other East Neuk attractions. Go mid-week if you can; weekends draw coach groups and it gets rammed. Allow an extra hour if you fancy the café - the coffee's decent and the views back towards the Forth Bridge are excellent.
