The Serpentine

The Serpentine is a proper water feature just outside Chester - a curved lake that winds through the landscape in a way that actually justifies its name. It's the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss, tucked away from the main drag but close enough that you can reach it from your caravan in minutes.

You can walk the perimeter, which takes a decent stretch but rewards you with decent views across the water. It's more functional than spectacular - no dramatic cliffs or dramatic vistas - but there's something honest about that. Fishermen come here. Dog walkers too. Families will find it an easy afternoon out, though younger kids might get restless after an hour or so once they've done a lap.

The lake sits within reasonable distance of Manor Wood, Netherwood (which practically borders Chester itself), and Birch Bank Farm if you're camping in the area. Ideal if you're based at one of these sites and want a gentle walk without driving anywhere. No drama, no queues, no entrance fee nonsense.

Best visited on a clear day when the reflections actually work. Midweek mornings tend to be quieter. Winter's fine too if you've got the layers - fewer people means you can actually hear the water. Not a day-trip destination on its own, but a solid half-day activity alongside exploring Chester proper.
