The Shamrock

The Shamrock sits on the Devon-Cornwall border near Tavistock, a modest stone monument that marks where three counties meet - Devon, Cornwall, and the old Duchy boundary. It's the sort of landmark that stops you mid-walk, makes you pull out your phone to tell someone you've found it, then you're ready to move on. Not exactly a destination in itself, but absolutely worth a detour if you're rambling through this part of the moor.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's the kind of spot that rewards those who actually explore the landscape rather than just drive through it. You can stand at the junction, take a photo, maybe consult an ordnance survey map and feel properly smug about being at a boundary point. Kids might find it mildly interesting for five minutes - there's something about borders that catches their attention - but don't expect them to linger.

The area around Tavistock is cracking for a walking holiday, and both Sunnyside Eco Glamping and Woodovis Holiday Park are well-placed bases. From either, you can plot a route that takes in The Shamrock as part of a larger moorland circuit rather than treating it as a standalone pilgrimage. It's free, obviously - it's a stone marker in the middle of nowhere - and accessible year-round, though winter moor walking comes with proper mud and wind. Allow an hour or so as part of a broader walk, not as its own attraction. If you're into boundary stones and geographical oddities, you'll enjoy it. If you want something with facilities or a tea room attached, keep walking.
