The Spirit of Enterprise

The Spirit of Enterprise sits just outside Saffron Walden, a working reminder of how ordinary people once made their living from the land. It's a historic site that preserves traditional rural skills and crafts - the sort of place where you actually see someone demonstrating how things were done rather than just reading about it behind glass.

What you get here depends on what's on when you visit. There are usually craftspeople and historians about, showing blacksmithing, woodworking, or whatever the seasonal programme includes. Kids tend to engage with it properly because it's hands-on and there's movement - nobody's standing still listening to a lecture. Allow a couple of hours, though you could stretch it to three if you're chatting to the artisans. It's free to wander around, which is a nice bonus. Best visited on a day when demonstrations are running - worth checking ahead before you make the trip from your accommodation.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - HappenOak Treehouse is only four miles away, or Piggles Retreat at five and a half - it's an easy half-hour detour between whatever else you're doing in the area. Not a day-long destination on its own, but proper worth the stop if you're exploring rural Cambridgeshire and want something a bit more grounded than the usual tourist circuit.
