The Stables

The Stables is a converted gallery space just outside Folkestone, housed in what was once - you've guessed it - actual stables. It's the sort of place that takes its bones seriously: exposed beams, original brick, the lot. The gallery rotates contemporary art and craft exhibitions throughout the year, so what's on depends entirely on when you visit.

You'll find it works best if you're already in the area rather than making a special trip from town. The space itself is intimate - not huge, not trying to be - and you can walk through in maybe 45 minutes unless something really grabs you. Art types will appreciate the local and emerging artists they tend to feature. Families with teenagers who actually care about art might find it worthwhile; younger kids will get bored after ten minutes, if I'm honest.

The proximity to Folkestone means you could pair it with a day on the coast. It's also reasonably placed if you're staying at Varne Ridge Holiday Park or Greenhill Glamping - both are close enough that it wouldn't feel like much of a detour. Black Horse Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits a bit further out.

I'd check ahead before visiting - opening hours and admission details aren't consistent online, and you don't want to drive out to find it closed. Ring ahead or check their social media if you can find it. On a grey Kentish afternoon when you want something low-key, though, it's a proper little find.
