The Studio

The Studio sits just outside Whitley Bay and functions as a working gallery space where you can actually watch artists at work rather than just gawping at finished pieces behind glass. It's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander - you'll find paintings, sculpture, and craft work spread across the studio, with the occasional artist happy to chat about what they're making if you catch them in the right mood.

It works best for anyone with a genuine interest in contemporary art and the creative process. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming unless the kids are already into art - there's not much to do beyond looking, and that holds attention only so long for most under-tens. Adults and older teens will get more from it, especially if you time it right and catch someone working.

The gallery operates on a fairly informal basis, so it's worth checking ahead for opening hours and whether there's an admission charge - both can vary depending on what's being shown. Allow an hour or so, longer if you strike up a conversation with one of the artists. It makes a decent half-morning activity before heading to one of the nearby parks. Old Hartley Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is barely three miles away, while Parkdean's Whitley Bay location is similarly close, so you can easily combine a gallery visit with time outdoors on the coast. Not a major draw in itself, but solid if you're staying locally and want something slightly different.
