The Sun

The Sun is a contemporary art gallery tucked into York's cultural landscape, and it's one of those spaces that rewards turning up without massive expectations. Walkers and art types will get the most from it. If you're staying at Nurseries Caravan Park just outside York, it's barely a mile into the city centre, so utterly doable on foot. Families with younger kids might find it a bit hit-and-miss depending on what's on - some exhibitions will engage them, others absolutely won't. Teenagers who are into contemporary work tend to find it worth the visit.

The real strength is that it sits within York itself, so you're not making a special journey. Pop in while you're doing the high street, having a coffee, or wandering between the Minster and the river. It's free to enter, which removes the sting if the current show doesn't quite click. Cawood Park and Wagtail Park give you the same access to York with a bit more distance from town, but The Sun remains one of those proper small-gallery experiences that still exists in historic cities if you know where to look.
