The Sunken Garden

Walking down into The Sunken Garden feels like stepping back in time - the ground simply falls away and suddenly you're surrounded by Victorian-era planting and mature trees that block out the wider world. It's a proper slice of garden history, free to wander through, and the whole thing takes about 45 minutes if you're not rushing.

The garden itself is modest by grand estate standards, but that's rather the point. You get winding paths, herbaceous borders that look decent if you hit them in season, and the occasional bench where you can actually sit and think without crowds fighting for space. The Victorian bones are still very much here - this is a place for people who actually care about garden design, not those after Instagram backdrops.

It's genuinely worth the detour if you're staying at Mercury Holiday Park or any of the caravan sites dotted around Southampton - they're all within spitting distance. Families with young kids might find it a bit slow after 20 minutes unless the little ones are obsessed with digging for bugs, but walkers and serious gardeners will properly enjoy themselves. Best visited in spring or early summer when the borders are actually doing something.

Free entry is a genuine gift. Nearest facilities and cafes are in Southampton itself, so plan accordingly. The garden works perfectly as a morning outing before heading to the coast or exploring the New Forest, which sits just inland.
