The Tartan Robin

You'll spot it before you expect to - a cheerful red-breasted robin painted onto a granite boulder beside the road near Blairgowrie. It's one of those roadside oddities that stops you mid-drive, makes you pull over, and spend ten minutes wondering who put it there and why.

The Tartan Robin is exactly what it sounds: a robin dressed in tartan, rendered in bright paint on stone. It's small, genuinely charming, and utterly unpretentious. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no faffing about. You turn up, you look at it, you take a photo, you move on. The whole experience takes maybe five minutes, which is precisely its appeal.

It works best as a quirky pit stop during a longer Aberdeenshire loop rather than a destination in itself. Families with young children tend to enjoy the novelty of it - there's something appealing about a wee painted bird that doesn't require queuing or entry fees. History enthusiasts might find it less rewarding than actual monuments, but it's the sort of thing that makes a road trip feel properly Scottish without trying too hard.

If you're staying at Glenshee Glamping or Nethercraig Holiday Park - both within easy reach - it's worth detouring past. Don't block the road though. Park sensibly and be ready to move along quickly. It's one of those attractions that's genuinely better for not being polished up or made official.
