The Vat

The Vat is a proper underground chamber carved out by water over millennia, sitting just outside Aboyne in Aberdeenshire. You're looking at a sandstone cavern that's been shaped by the River Dee's relentless work - water still runs through it, and the whole thing feels genuinely ancient the moment you step inside. The cave itself isn't vast, but it's atmospheric: damp stone, the sound of water echoing off the walls, and that particular chill you only get underground.

It's a short walk from the car park, nothing strenuous, which makes it decent for families with older kids who won't mind scrambling about a bit. Bring a torch - the cave is dark, properly dark. Adults interested in geology or just wanting something a bit different from the usual Highland walk will find it worth the detour. You won't spend hours here, maybe 20 minutes tops inside, but it's the kind of place that stays with you.

Free to visit and open year-round, though winter can be slippery underfoot. The Vat works well as part of a wider Deeside exploration - Firbank Park and Ballater Caravan Park are both within easy reach if you're basing yourself locally. Aboyne itself is a small village with decent facilities. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged if possible. It's not dramatic, but it's real and undeniably Scottish.
