The Wallace Collection

You'll find yourself standing in front of an 18th-century townhouse on Manchester Square, and suddenly you're stepping into one of London's best-kept secrets. The Wallace Collection is a proper art gallery, but it doesn't feel like a stuffy museum - it's more like wandering through a wealthy collector's home, because that's essentially what it is.

Inside, there are paintings by Rembrandt and Rubens, French furniture that's almost too beautiful to look at, and an armoury that genuinely impresses even people who normally ignore weapons. The collection sprawls across four floors, and you could easily spend two hours here without rushing, or three if you're the type to read every label.

It's excellent for adults interested in Old Masters or decorative arts - anyone younger than fifteen will likely tire within an hour unless they're unusually keen on this stuff. There's no entrance fee, which feels miraculous given what's on display. The courtyard café is decent if you need a break, though a bit pricey.

If you're staying at Lovat Parks just outside the city, getting into central London for this is straightforward. It's quieter than the National Gallery and far less overwhelming. The backstreets around Manchester Square are lovely for a walk afterwards. Worth the trip from a holiday park, genuinely.
