The World Of James Herriot

The house where James Herriot actually lived and worked is exactly what you'd expect - a proper Yorkshire veterinary surgery frozen in time, right in the middle of Thirsk. Walk through the waiting room and you're back in the 1940s, with period furniture and the original desk where Herriot's receptionist sat. Upstairs, his living quarters are laid out as they would have been when he was writing those famous books about his life as a country vet.

It's genuinely moving for fans of the books and TV series, though non-devotees might find an hour a bit much. The museum does a solid job of blending his fictional stories with actual case notes and photographs from his real practice. You get a real sense of how rural veterinary work actually looked - often unglamorous, frequently muddy, always on call.

Take at least ninety minutes if you're going to do it properly. The staff are knowledgeable without being pushy, and there's a small gift shop if you want to pick up a copy of All Creatures Great and Small for a re-read. It's worth combining with a walk around Thirsk itself, which still has that market town charm Herriot wrote about.

If you're staying at Hillside Caravan Park just outside town, this makes an excellent rainy afternoon activity. Woodland Lakes Lodges, a bit further out, could use this as a half-day break between longer activities. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worthwhile if you've got any affection for the books or the landscape that inspired them.
