Therfield Heath

Rolling chalk grassland that actually feels wild - that's what you get at Therfield Heath just east of Royston. The reserve stretches across proper open country with rare wildflowers and butterflies that vanish if you blink, so bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting them. The views across the Cambridgeshire landscape are genuinely worth the walk, especially in late spring when the orchids are out.

It's a walker's spot, full stop. Don't expect facilities or car parks with coffee kiosks - this is the real thing. You'll want proper footwear because the chalk can be slippery when wet, and the paths aren't manicured. History buffs might appreciate that you're walking on ancient grazing land, but this isn't a heritage site with plaques and interpretation boards. It's just you and the heath.

Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to explore properly. The reserve is free and open all year, though spring and early summer are when it earns your time. It works nicely as a morning walk if you're based at Guilden Gate Glamping or Ashridge Farm nearby - close enough that you could easily visit on the same day as exploring Royston itself. Families with young children might find it a bit exposed and featureless, but older kids who enjoy nature will get something real from it. Not Instagram-friendly, but genuinely rewarding if you like your countryside honest.
