Thurle Down

The walk up Thurle Down rewards you with one of those views that makes the Oxfordshire countryside actually feel like proper countryside. It's not a mountain - this is the Downs, so expect gentle slopes rather than anything that'll leave you gasping - but the summit gives you a genuine sense of elevation and space across the surrounding farmland.

You're looking at around an hour's walk from Wallingford, depending on your route and how often you stop. The paths are clear enough, though they can get muddy in winter. It's the sort of place where walkers genuinely belong, and families with reasonably keen legs will manage it without complaint. The views alone make it worth the effort, especially on a clear day when you can actually see what you're looking at.

There's nothing built on top - no visitor centre, no cafe - just you and the down. Free to visit, obviously. If you're staying at Rolling Fields Glamping nearby, it's practically on your doorstep. Ridgeway View Campsite and Bridge Villa are slightly further out but all three put you within reasonable striking distance for an afternoon walk.

Go for the walk itself rather than expecting facilities or crowds. It's straightforward enough for a casual outing but genuinely rewarding once you're up there. The kind of place that reminds you why people bother with countryside holidays in the first place.
