Tiggywinkles Visitor Centre

The British wildlife rescue centre near Thame is one of those places that surprises you with how much it matters. Tiggywinkles exists to care for injured hedgehogs, badgers, foxes, and birds - and visitors can watch the staff get on with the actual work of mending broken animals rather than just gawping at exhibits behind glass.

You'll see the hospital wards where creatures recover, the outdoor enclosures where released animals build strength before heading home, and depending on the day, you might catch feeding time or watch vets working. It's less theme park, more working sanctuary, which is precisely why it works so well. Children often find it more real and affecting than a zoo. Adults tend to arrive thinking they'll spend twenty minutes and leave two hours later.

The centre operates on donations, and there's no charge for entry - though you'll want to contribute something toward the hedgehog care. Expect to spend 45 minutes to two hours properly. Spring and early summer are best if you want to see young animals and peak activity. Winter's quieter but the rescue work's just as intense.
