Tile Wood

A proper woodland walk without the crowds you get at the nature reserves everyone's heard of. Tile Wood is dense and quiet - ancient oak and hornbeam stretching overhead, the forest floor soft underfoot after rain. You're walking through what feels like someone's secret corner of Essex, which frankly doesn't get enough credit for having decent woodland left.

It's best for anyone who wants a straightforward forest ramble without the visitor centre bustle. No children's play areas, no café, no interpretation boards. Just trees, air, and the occasional dog walker. Allow forty minutes to an hour depending on which paths you take - it's not vast but it's satisfying. Bring proper walking shoes if it's been wet; parts can get boggy.

The nearest town is Benfleet, which means you're right in that bit of Essex between the Thames and the greenbelt. If you're staying at Essex Glamping just down the road, this becomes your obvious morning walk before heading back for breakfast. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly as part of a wider park stay rather than as a destination in itself.

The appeal is exactly that it feels forgotten. No admission fee, no opening hours to worry about - just show up. Go when it's overcast and a bit damp; somehow the woodland shows itself better that way.
