Tilford Village Green

The two rivers that converge at Tilford meet beneath a pair of medieval bridges, and that's really the heart of the place. It's a proper Surrey village green - wide open, centred around the cricket pitch, with the water running alongside and ancient trees dotting the grass. You won't find fancy facilities here, just space to roam, a few picnic spots, and the kind of scenery that makes you understand why people settle in places like this.

The nature reserve element means the banks are managed for wildlife - you'll spot dragonflies in summer, the odd heron if you're lucky, and the usual riverside birds. It's genuinely peaceful, especially on weekdays when the day-trippers from Farnham haven't arrived yet. A walk along either riverbank takes about twenty minutes each way, nothing strenuous, and the bridges themselves are worth studying if you're into that sort of medieval detail.

Families with young kids will get a good hour here - the water's shallow in places, the paths are accessible, and there's room to let them loose. Walkers treating it as a stop-off between longer routes will find it a worthwhile break. It's free, as it should be, and requires no planning beyond decent shoes if the ground's been wet.
