Tilly’s Meadow

A flat stretch of Norfolk meadowland east of Norwich that looks unremarkable until you actually stand in it. Tilly's Meadow is proper countryside - the kind of place where the horizon goes on forever and you can hear yourself think. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds. Just grass, wildflowers when they're in season, and the kind of light that makes you understand why painters have always been drawn to Norfolk.

It works best for walkers who aren't after a destination so much as a walk itself. History types might appreciate the layer of agricultural Norfolk underneath - this land has been worked for centuries. Families with restless kids under eight will probably find it a bit thin; there's no playground, no tea stand, and if your children need activities, this isn't it.

Give yourself an hour minimum if you're coming from Norwich. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and no fixed opening hours - it's the sort of place you can visit whenever. Bring proper waterproofs; Norfolk in winter can be boggy.

If you're staying at Manor Farm or West Runton, both just over 6 miles away, this makes a straightforward morning walk before heading to the coast or looping back via other local routes. The Grove Glamping nearby offers a fancier base if you want countryside with comfort. Tilly's Meadow doesn't try to be anything other than what it is, which is exactly why it's worth the short drive.
