Tintagel Castle

Tintagel Castle, near Bodmin, clings to black cliffs above the Cornish coast - more atmosphere than intact stonework, but that's rather the point. You're walking among 13th-century walls that fragment against sea spray and granite, and the castle never lets you forget its position. The new footbridge - added in recent years - gives proper access to the inner ward, saving you from scrambling up sketchy paths like previous visitors did.

The site suits anyone drawn to romantic ruin hunting rather than the tidy presentation of English Heritage showpieces. History buffs will spend a solid two hours picking through what remains and reading the interpretation boards, though families with small children might find it less engaging - there's limited shelter, the wind can be relentless, and once you've crossed the bridge and explored the ruins, there's not much else to do on the headland itself. The clifftop walk is genuinely striking though, and the approach from the village is pleasant enough.

Admission charges apply, and you should allow at least ninety minutes. Go in late afternoon if you can - the light improves and crowds thin out. Rosebud Farm Touring Park, just over four miles away near Bodmin, makes a sensible base if you're planning a longer Cornish holiday. Tintagel works best as part of a coastal day out rather than a standalone visit, but the setting justifies the trip.
