Tittenley Pool

The water at Tittenley Pool sits still and dark, ringed by mature trees that lean down almost to the surface. It's a proper working landscape - this isn't some manicured visitor attraction with a cafe and a car park, it's a working pool that's been part of the Cheshire countryside for centuries, originally built to power mills further downstream.

You can walk the perimeter easily enough, which takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace. The paths are well-trodden and the whole thing feels like the kind of place locals know about but tourists miss. In spring the banks are thick with new growth; by summer it's genuinely peaceful, the sort of spot where you might actually see something - kingfishers are common here, and the fishing is decent if you're into that.

It works as a break in the day rather than a reason to drive out on its own. Nantwich itself is barely three miles away, so it slots nicely into a broader wander around the area. If you're staying at Hawk Lake or Marbury Camp, both within six miles, you could easily spend a morning here without feeling like you've wasted the trip. Families with young kids might get restless after an hour - there's nothing to do except walk and look - but walkers will appreciate it as a quiet interlude. Free to access, no facilities to speak of, and no particular time to visit beyond "when the light's good and you fancy a stroll". Winter can be boggy underfoot.
