Top Slate Covert

The forest floor at Top Slate Covert is carpeted with moss and the kind of damp leaf litter that means you're properly in the Welsh woodland. This small conifer plantation sits just outside Llanfairpwllgwyngyll on Anglesey, and while it won't take your breath away with dramatic vistas, it's a genuinely useful spot if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks and fancy a quiet walk without driving anywhere.

What you get here is straightforward - a compact forest block with paths that loop through the trees. No waterfalls, no viewpoints, no Instagram moments. Just the sound of birds and the smell of pine needles. The whole thing takes maybe 45 minutes at an amble, which makes it ideal as a morning walk before breakfast or when the weather's turned a bit dodgy and you want shelter from the wind.

It's walkers' terrain, really. Kids under ten might find it a bit samey unless they're genuinely into spotting birds or collecting interesting sticks. The paths are decent enough but can get boggy after rain, so proper boots are worth considering. Access is free and there's no formal visitor infrastructure - just turn up.
