Tornamuck

The forest floor at Tornamuck is soft underfoot - proper spongy moss and pine needles that muffle your footsteps entirely. You're in Aberdeenshire's Scottish Highlands, just a few miles from Laurencekirk, walking through mature Scots pine with the occasional birch breaking up the canopy. It's the kind of place where the light filters green and golden, and you lose track of time pretty quickly.

What you get here is genuine forest walking without the crowds. There are paths threading through, though nothing dramatic - no waterfalls or viewpoints, just consistent woodland. It's good for families who want their kids burning off energy in the trees, and walkers will appreciate the quietness. Allow a couple of hours if you want to potter about properly; you could do a quicker lap in forty minutes.

The real draw is accessibility. Tornamuck isn't trying to be anything fancy - it's just a solid patch of forest that actually feels like forest, not a manicured theme park. Bring waterproofs because it'll be damp underfoot even when it hasn't rained. Winter walks here are particularly good when the trees are bare and you can see further.

If you're based at Dovecot Caravan Park or Royal Arch Riverside Park nearby, both excellent spots, Tornamuck makes for a straightforward half-day excursion. Combine it with Laurencekirk itself if you need lunch or a coffee, but don't expect fireworks. Sometimes you just need a walk in the trees.
