Torquay Golf Club is a proper 18-hole course that's been going since the late 1800s, and it shows - in the best way. The layout takes advantage of the Devon landscape, threading through tree-lined fairways with that sea backdrop doing its thing in the distance.

It's not a championship beast of a course, but it's properly maintained and tricky enough to keep you honest. You'll find yourself using every club in the bag across these 6,000 yards or so. The greens are quick without being ridiculous, and the rough actually punishes you when you deserve it.

This is one for golfers who actually want to play golf rather than treat it as a social stroll. Families might find it a bit much if you've only got occasional players in the group.
