Tourner Bury

There's not much to see at Tourner Bury, to be honest. This Iron Age fort sits just outside Hayling Island, and what remains is essentially a grassed-over earthwork - the kind of thing you'd walk straight past if you didn't know what you were looking at. The site itself consists of a modest defensive bank and ditch system, dating back around two thousand years, but the actual archaeology is subtle. You're not standing in front of dramatic stone ramparts or anything remotely Instagram-worthy.

That said, if you're already staying at one of the nearby parks - Mill Rythe or Fishery Creek are practically on your doorstep - it's absolutely worth a 20-minute detour. History enthusiasts will appreciate the quietness of it, the chance to stand where people once actually lived and defended themselves against invaders. Kids might find it interesting for five minutes, then get bored. Walkers passing through between Hayling Island and the mainland will find it a reasonable excuse to stretch their legs.

The lack of facilities or formal visitor infrastructure means you'll want to check opening hours and admission details locally before making the trip. Hayling Island itself offers far more conventional holiday entertainment - beaches, shops, cafes - so don't expect Tourner Bury to be your holiday highlight. It's the kind of stop you make because you're curious about what came before the caravans and the ice cream vans, not because it's going to blow your mind. Proper slice of Hampshire archaeology, though.
