Trails slaley forest

The forest sits on moorland just outside Hexham, a proper working woodland rather than some manicured attraction. You get a network of walking trails threading through conifer plantations and open heathland - the sort of place where you can lose an hour without meaning to and feel genuinely away from things.

There's nothing flash here. No visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. Just forest, tracks, and space to breathe. Walkers will find it decent - the trails vary from gentle loops to longer woodland walks that work your legs a bit. On a clear day you get views out over the Tyne Valley. Families with kids who can handle muddy paths and don't need constant entertainment will do well enough, though younger children might find it a touch samey after a while.

The access appears free, which is just how it should be. Go in autumn when the light's proper golden through the trees, or spring when things are pushing through. Avoid it when it's been raining heavily unless you enjoy bog-standard bog.

If you're staying at Springhouse Boutique Holiday Park or Village Green just down the road, this makes a natural half-day excursion. It's low-key enough that you won't feel pressured to make a whole day of it, but solid enough that you won't regret the drive. Real forest walking without the Cairngorms trek.
