Trebarwith CWT Reserve

The cliffs at Trebarwith drop away sudden and dramatic, grey stone slicing down to a narrow shale beach where the Atlantic does its work. It's a proper geology lesson written in rock face - all those layers tell you something about deep time, though honestly you're more likely to be thinking about not slipping on the wet shale than pondering ancient seas.

This is a working reserve, not a manicured visitor attraction, which means it feels real. You get dramatic coastal scenery without the crowds you'd find further west towards Tintagel. The beach itself is small and dark, littered with fossils if you know what to look for, and the walk down takes maybe twenty minutes depending on your knees. Worth doing at low tide if you want to poke about on the actual sand.

Walkers and geology enthusiasts will get the most from it. Young kids might find it a bit stark after the first ten minutes - there's no shop, no facilities, just the sound of waves and wind. If you're based at Rosebud Farm, the adult-only touring park a few miles inland near Bodmin, this makes a cracking half-day excursion to break up a quiet holiday. The contrast between the peaceful park and this raw coastline works well.

Timing matters here. Morning light hits the cliffs properly, and you'll want to check the tide before you go - getting cut off would ruin anyone's afternoon. There's a small car park, and it's free to visit. Allow two hours if you're actually going down to the beach.
