Trehawke Wood

Walking into Trehawke Wood near Widegates feels like stepping back into something properly wild. The canopy closes in quickly - tall trees, dappled light, proper woodland floor underfoot. It's the sort of place where you half expect to stumble on a stone circle or an old tin mine entrance, though mostly you'll just find peace and the occasional dog walker.

The wood itself is modest but genuine. No visitor centre, no facilities, just trees doing what trees do. You can wander the paths for twenty minutes or stretch it into an hour depending on your mood and fitness. It's not dramatic like the gorges further south, and it won't blow your mind with views, but there's something refreshing about woodland that hasn't been polished up for tourists. Kids will enjoy it if they're the exploring type - there are fallen logs to climb over, stream crossings to work out, that sort of thing. Older children and adults after a straightforward walk will get the most from it.

Free to access as far as anyone can tell. There's no obvious car park signage, so you'll need to find a quiet spot near the entrance and be respectful about it. Best visited in autumn when the ground's least muddy and the light's golden through the leaves. Works nicely as a quick detour if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Lydcott Glamping or Waterside Tregoad - takes the edge off cabin fever without eating half your day.
