Trellwyn Fawr Standing Stone

A weathered slab of stone standing alone in the Pembrokeshire countryside, Trellwyn Fawr is one of those Bronze Age monuments that stops you mid-walk and makes you think about who bothered to haul this thing here thousands of years ago. It's accessible year-round, free, and requires nothing more than a bit of local knowledge to find - it's not signposted like some tourist trap. The stone itself is roughly five metres tall, which sounds impressive until you're actually standing next to it and realise it's been quietly doing its job for about 4,000 years while everything else crumbled.

This is proper walker territory. It's a decent spot if you're combining it with wider rambles around Newport and the Preseli Hills - the landscape here rewards poking about. Don't expect visitor facilities or an interpretation board spelling everything out. You'll want good OS map skills or GPS, and honestly, that's part of the appeal. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming on its own - there's no visitor centre, no cafe, nowhere to kick about. But take a proper walk out to it as part of a day exploring the area and it lands differently.

The nearby camping options at The Hide Pembrokeshire and Trewrach Glamping put you within easy striking distance. Worth combining with other Preseli monument-hunting or coastal walks from Fishguard. Go in spring or autumn when you won't be melting or freezing, and the light on the stone is actually worth photographing. It's a bit of a detour from the beaten track, but that's exactly why you should go.
