Trent Park

The woodland at Trent Park spreads across 413 acres just outside Waltham Cross - a proper sprawl of ancient trees, open grassland, and lakes that feels surprisingly removed from the commuter towns nearby. You'll find yourself walking through beech and oak, with the occasional grand old mansion glimpsed through the branches. It's a working nature reserve, which means you're not just plodding round manicured pathways - you actually see wildlife doing its thing.

This is the place for serious walkers and anyone after a proper escape rather than a quick stroll. The terrain varies enough to keep things interesting: lakeside paths that are flat and easy, then rougher sections through woodland if you fancy more of a challenge. Allow three to four hours if you want to see the best of it without rushing. History buffs will appreciate the old estate connections - the place has proper stories attached to it.

Trent Park works beautifully as a base for exploring the wider area. You're well positioned between Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park in Edmonton and Sewardstone if you're after a caravan holiday, both within easy reach. The reserve itself is free to access - no ticket nonsense - and you can turn up whenever. Best visited in spring or autumn when the woodland colours are actually worth the trip, though even winter has its stark appeal.

Bring binoculars if you're keen on birds. Bring proper boots - the ground gets muddy. Don't expect a cafe or facilities, so pack accordingly.
