There's no formal trail system here, which means you're essentially picking your own route through the trees, following natural paths worn by deer and regular walkers.

It's brilliant for anyone who wants woodland without the crowds. Families with older kids will manage fine - younger ones might find the uneven ground tricky. Serious walkers love it because you can disappear for a couple of hours without bumping into another soul. The light filters through in that particular way only old forests manage, especially on overcast afternoons.

There's no entry fee, no visitor centre, no facilities. Go early if you value peace. Allow two to three hours depending on how far you fancy wandering. Winter's actually decent if you don't mind mud - better visibility without the leaf cover.
