Tuckingmill Wood

The woodland around Tuckingmill, just inland from Bude, is proper Cornish countryside - all twisted oaks, ferns, and that particular smell of damp earth that means you're properly away from the coast. It's not a manicured country estate; this is working woodland that feels lived-in, walked-through, forgotten about by most tourists heading for the beaches.

You can wander the paths for an hour or just cut through for twenty minutes depending on mood. There are enough trails to keep you occupied without needing a map, though the whole area's compact enough that getting properly lost takes real effort. The light filters through the canopy in that golden way forests do on decent afternoons, and if you're here when the rhododendrons are out, it's genuinely lovely.

Walkers will appreciate the shade on hot days, particularly useful when you've overdone it on Bude's coastal paths. Families with younger kids won't be blown away - there's no visitor centre or adventure playground - but it's a nice break from beach time and requires barely any planning. It's free, open whenever, and the nearest proper parking is back towards Bude itself.
