Tumbling Bay Playground

The playground sits within Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, a sprawling green space in Stratford that's been entirely reimagined since the 2012 Games. Tumbling Bay itself is a wooden adventure playground - all climbing frames, slides, and rope structures built from timber - designed for kids who've outgrown the standard swings and roundabout setup.

It's genuinely well-designed. The apparatus actually challenges children aged roughly 5 to 12, with multiple levels of difficulty so younger kids aren't completely lost while older ones don't die of boredom within fifteen minutes. The timber construction feels less corporate than plastic alternatives, and the whole thing is free.

You'll need a good hour here if your kids are the type to actually use playgrounds rather than just run past them once. The surrounding park is the real draw though - it's basically London's best green space for a day out, with walking trails, water features, and plenty of lawn to collapse on. On a decent weekend, it's rammed, so weekday visits are considerably more pleasant.

If you're camping at Lee Valley up in Edmonton, Tumbling Bay works as a solid half-day stopover en route or as part of a longer park visit. It's easy to reach via the Elizabeth Line from central London, or drive and use the car parks dotted around the Olympic Park. Given the park itself is so good, the playground is really just one element of a much larger day out rather than a destination in its own right.
