Tumulus. Mill Hill Bowl Barrow

A Bronze Age burial mound sits quietly on the Norfolk landscape, just east of Great Yarmouth. This is the Mill Hill Bowl Barrow - a tumulus that's been here for something like 3,500 years, and it looks exactly like what it is: a grassy hump in the field.

It's not dramatic. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no café. You turn up, you see a low earthwork, you either find it moving or you don't. Archaeology types will appreciate the thing for what it is - evidence of Bronze Age burial practices in East Anglia. Everyone else might spend ten minutes here and move on. That's fair enough.

The walk to it is pleasant enough if you're staying at Wild Duck Holiday Park just down the road, or any of the other caravan sites clustered around this stretch. It breaks up a day nicely. Twenty minutes maximum, no admission charge, no faffing about. Good if you've got kids interested in history or just want to say you've seen something genuinely ancient.

Winter's probably the best time, when the grass is shorter and you can actually see the mound's shape properly. Summer growth can make it look like just another bump in the field. There's not much nearby in terms of other attractions, so treat this as a useful diversion rather than a destination in itself. It's the sort of thing you do because you're in the area anyway, staying at one of the holiday parks for a week.
