Twisting Alders Coppice

The paths through Twisting Alders Coppice are genuinely disorientating the first time you walk them. You're near Dorchester, but it feels properly remote - alder and oak crowding in tight, the canopy thick enough that even on bright days there's a cool, damp quality to the air. The trees do twist, wickedly, as if they've been wrung out by hand. It's the sort of place that rewards wandering slowly rather than bombing through with a destination in mind.

This works best for walkers who actually like woods - not the Instagram crowd after a quick spin, but people who want to listen to it rather than photograph it. The coppice has that managed wildness typical of Dorset, with clearings opening up unexpectedly and sightlines that shift constantly. You can easily lose ninety minutes here without feeling you've done miles. Children might find it engaging for an hour, then get restless; teenagers usually prefer somewhere with purpose.

There's no obvious visitor infrastructure that I could find, so come prepared - sensible shoes, maybe a map app on your phone, definitely a rain jacket. The soil gets boggy after wet weather. Admission appears free, though the coppice feels like the sort of place that's been left relatively quiet on purpose.

It sits well within a Dorset park holiday - Green Valley Yurts and Cabin is less than six miles away, and this pairs nicely with rambles around the county's other woodland. It's not a destination in itself, but part of a proper forest-focused break. Worth the detour if you're in the area.
