Twyning Recreation Ground

The River Avon runs through Twyning Recreation Ground just outside Tewkesbury, and that's really the draw here - a proper slice of riverside Worcestershire where you can actually get down to the water without fighting through brambles or private land. It's a modest spot, nothing fancy, but the kind of place locals know about and tourists tend to miss.

You've got open grassland sloping toward the river, some mature trees for shade, and enough space to let kids run around without losing sight of them. The ground itself is well-maintained, which is more than you can say for some council-run sites. A walk along the bank takes twenty minutes or so if you're meandering - longer if you're actually watching for birds, which you should be. The water brings waders and ducks through depending on season.

It's free admission and there's no visible charge for parking, though I'd check locally as these things do change. Allow an hour if you're just having a poke about, or three if you're serious about birdwatching or settling in with a picnic. Families with younger children will find it works well - flat ground, room to move, enough novelty in spotting wildlife to hold attention.

Stay at Cotswold Grange Country Park or Croft Farm Water Park - both within walking distance - and you've got a proper little base for exploring the Avon Valley. Twyning isn't a destination in itself, but it fits nicely into a weekend where you're already in the area poking around Tewkesbury's abbey and riverside walks.
