Undiscovered Cotswolds

The Cotswolds have a reputation for being rammed with tourists clutching guidebooks, but venture beyond the usual Broadway and Bourton-on-the-Water circuit and you'll find villages that feel genuinely lived-in. Witney, just down the road, makes a decent base - it's got proper independent shops and a working market that locals actually use, not just a stage set for visitors.

What makes the undiscovered bits work is that they're not trying. You get the honey-coloured stone cottages, the rolling fields, the dry-stone walls, but without the car parks full of coach tours. The walking is genuinely excellent - there are bridleways that loop between villages where you'll see more sheep than people. Families with older kids will appreciate the space to roam; younger ones might find it a bit quiet after an hour.

The area works brilliantly as part of a camping holiday - Grove Farm Glamping Pods and Cotswold Edge Caravan & Camping are both close enough to Witney that you're not isolated, but far enough out that you feel proper countryside. Spring and early autumn are best - summer gets busier, and winter can feel a bit bleak if the weather turns.

There's no single "attraction" to tick off here, which is precisely the point. It's about walking between villages, finding a pub that does decent food, sitting in a field for a bit. Bring good boots and realistic expectations - this is about atmosphere, not Instagram moments.
